Case Study - Series introduction
One interesting alternative way companies sometimes choose to turn literature into video is by creating a series. Often, TV series are able to have more detail and not cut out things that wouldn't be able to fit into a two hour film. It allows more time for character development, extended tension and dramatization and also for other side characters to have their plots alongside the protagonists.
4 Books to Series that I have thought about reviewing:
- Bridgerton - Netflix Series released in 2020
- Originated from a set of 9 books written by Julia Quinn
- The Handmaid's Tale - Series released in 2017
- The Handmaid's Tale novel was originally written by Margaret Atwood, published in 1985
- Shadow and Bone - Netflix Series released in 2021
- Came from 3 books making up the Grisha Triology written by Leigh Bardugo
- Normal People - Series released on BBC 3 in 2020
- Came from the Normal People Novel written by Sally Rooney published in 2018
Turning books into TV shows seems to be a relatively new phenomenon, previously having focussed on creating films only. It's becoming more common for producers to pick a series over a film, perhaps because people are more likely to use streaming services than pay to go to the cinema.
