Case study - Classics Introduction

It is sometimes difficult to define a piece of literature as a 'classic', since it is often subjective to the reader. Books that are regarded valuable and timeless by some may be shunned by others. The four books I have selected have all previously been considered as one of the greats throughout history, and have been included in university and other educational studies all around the world.

Currently, I have four classics in mind which I want to evaluate, however I am only going to pick one of them so that the workload remains manageable alongside my other case studies from different areas of literature. Also, I would like to be able to gather an in depth set of research about each book and film in order to truly answer my question, rather than having a weaker, yet wider selection of information.

My 4 options are:

  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen (1797)
  • Little Women by Louisa May Alcott (1869)
  • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (1924)
  • To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee (1960)

My plan is to read one of these books, and watch the retrospective film, and compare and contrast their similarities and differences. I will research the context surrounding the book and see how it has impacted society, whether it be at the time it was first published, or as a result of the film release.
